A rare spherical egg found on a farm in the South West is 'one-in-a-billion'. Ali Greene, processing the egg at Fenton Farm Eggs in Devon, noticed one egg acting oddly on the conveyer belt during her shift.

Upon closer inspection, she realised it was a rare round egg, with odds of finding such an anomaly being "one in a billion". After some digging, Ali learned that a similar egg had previously sold for £200.

She's now aiming to auction the unique find on March 18 in Exeter to benefit a charity.

Ali expressed her bewilderment, saying: "I have no idea what chicken it is. I don't even know why a chicken would lay a round egg."

The 57-year-old was tuned into the radio when the topic of round eggs came up, sparking her curiosity, reports Devon Live. On December 17, her wish was fulfilled as she spotted the unusual egg among the millions processed annually by the farm, which often sees oddly shaped eggs, some even resembling Maltesers.

However, this was a first for the farm. Ali mused, "I could have spotted one [round egg] in my past three years but I was never looking for one," and joked about the likelihood of encountering another such rarity: "I have to work for another 13 years to find another rare egg."

Upon realising the potential value of the egg, Ali, who volunteers for Devon Rape Crisis, decided to put it up for auction to support the charity. Yet, she admits to being "terrified" of accidentally dropping the precious item before the big day.

Ali shared his concerns, saying: "I have to take to the auction house and I am absolutely terrified if I drop it. It is wrapped in rock salt to keep it preserved.

"I am hoping to make £200 from it - the main thing is that the charity raises money."
